What Is an Infectious Disease Specialist?

Infectious disease (ID) specialists are physicians with advanced, fellowship-level training in diagnosing and treating infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. While many infections can be managed by your primary care physician, an ID specialist is recommended when:

  • Infections are complex, recurring, or not responding to standard treatment
  • You are immunocompromised due to medication, illness, or a transplant
